Smallmouth Bass
Aggressive, hard-fighting bass and explosive topwater strikes in the reservoirs of Central Oregon.
One of our favorite species on a fly rod.
The reservoirs in the northeastern region of Central Oregon provide prime habitat for smallmouth bass. These warm-water fisheries offer ideal conditions, with plenty of structure, deep-water refuge and an abundance of prey like crustaceans and juvenile fish. The result is a thriving bass population and the perfect setting for an exciting day on the water.
Nothing beats topwater.
Smallmouth bass are aggressive, hard-fighting fish that grow to several pounds in these waters. It’s no surprise that Prineville Reservoir held the Oregon state record from 1977 to 1989.
Depending on season and conditions, we use a variety of tactics, from fast-stripped streamers to finesse-style jigs. Our favorite by far is topwater. Surface poppers can trigger explosive strikes, one of the most thrilling ways to hook a bass on the fly. We fish 6 and 7 weight rods with floating and sinking lines to match the conditions and keep the action going all day.
